Description

We are a modern, forward-thinking estate at the heart of the East Neuk of Fife. Operating with a strong foundation in organic and regenerative practices, we manage 400 suckler cows, 1,600 ewes, a small herd of outdoor sows and 200 hectares of combinable crops.

We are recruiting a professional Shepherd to drive the success of our flock. This varied role offers opportunities to collaborate with our wider livestock, arable, on-farm butchery, and estate teams.

The Role

Your primary focus will be the continuous improvement of our 1,600-head flock. You will increase stock numbers and quality through strategic breeding and genetics while maintaining the highest standards of animal welfare, compliance, and market alignment.

The sheep enterprise consists of:

•Indoor Lambing: 450 ewes utilizing modern equipment to produce fat lambs for the early market.

•Outdoor Lambing: Remaining ewes managed via paddock grazing to provide fat lambs and replacement ewe lambs.

•Genetics: Native breeds focused on sound feet, high-quality fat lambs, and future system compatibility.

Innovation & Technology

Balcaskie is well-equipped with modern technology to assist your day-to-day operations. We utilize:

•TePari HD4 handling system

•Rappa mobile handling races

•On-site FEC testing and EID reading equipment

•AgriWebb data management system for precise performance recording

While data-driven decisions are key to our system, excellent, traditional stockmanship remains essential.

Team & Development

You will join a dedicated livestock team of four, backed by a supportive farm and office network. Balcaskie heavily invests in its people through continuous professional development (CPD), including:

•Regular strategic veterinary meetings

•Consultations with external industry experts

•Educational visits to organic, regenerative and industry leading enterprises

•Opportunities to represent the estate to stakeholders, customers and the public
