Herdsperson with responsibility of rearing Youngstock at Calving Time Spring Calving Dairy North Wessex Downs AONB

400 spring-calving cows

North Wessex Downs AONB less than 10 minutes drive from a town with schools, supermarkets & entertainment.

Were looking for someone with a genuine passion for cows, who enjoys working as part of a team, and is ready to play a key role in a progressive dairy farm.

The Farm

• 900 acres, mostly herbal leys

• Approx. 70 acres of maize grown annually

• Supermarket milk contract cow welfare is our top priority

• Low mastitis rates, excellent foot health and strong fertility are all great attributes of this herd

Recently invested in:

• New silage clamp

• SenseHub collars

• Modern 24/28 parlour with ACRs (only 5 years old) plans to expand as the herd grows

The Person

Were looking for someone who:

• Has at least 2 years experience of working on dairy farms with at least a basic understanding of rearing calves

• Foot trimming and Ai an advantage but not essential for this role but training will happily be provided should the candidate want to learn how to

• Holds a telehandler certificate (preferred, not essential)

• Is a great team player people are central to everything we do

• Puts cow welfare first and enjoys hands-on work

• Can plan ahead and think logically

• Will milk when required outside of calf rearing season, this will usually only be once a day anyway as we are a team of 4 and share it out alongside relief milkers.

The Role

• Rearing approx 120 dairy heifers each year

• Calf rearing begins in Feb with last calves weaned around May.

• Responsible for colostrum management and ensuring all calves born including beef receive adequate colostrum

• Feeding calves twice a day through the required time period Mon -Fri and then again Mon - Thurs before weekend off again. Every weekend and every other Friday will be done by a reliable relief.

• In charge of administering vaccines and looking after the overall health of the dairy calves

• New paddock set up for 2026 with the aim of maximising grass intake from the calves after weaning so this will require weighing at strategic points and a plan put in place for when this is to happen, to then be carried out under your charge with the wider team helping.

• Outside of calf rearing time this role will be back focused on the milking herd again primarily as a Herdsperson - so milking, feeding scraping as required - with you checking the youngstock and managing their grass as needed.
