Working Herd Manager/Senior Herdsperson

A family-run dairy farm based near Tiverton, Devon. We run a herd of 280 pedigree Jersey cows, calving all year round and are committed to the highest standards of animal welfare, high-quality milk production, and sustainable farming practices.

We are looking for a skilled and motivated Working Herd Manager/Senior Herdsperson to join our team and play a vital role in the daily operation and future development of the herd.

The Role

You will be responsible for the day-to-day management, care, welfare, and productivity of our herd. You will lead by example, working hands-on alongside the team to maintain the highest standards in herd health, milk quality, and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

•Full responsibility for herd health, fertility, and production

•Managing the milking of the herd and being part of the milking team (completing at least 50% of the milkings).

•Overseeing milking routines and parlour hygiene

•Implementation and recording of herd health plans, vaccinations, and treatments

•Regular monitoring of cow condition, lameness, and overall wellbeing

•Calf rearing and youngstock management support

•Collaborating with vets, nutritionists, and external advisors when required

•Data recording and herd software use

•Supervision and training of junior staff and relief workers

•Contributing to feed management

Requirements

•Proven experience in dairy herd management (minimum 3 years preferred)

•Strong practical skills and attention to detail

•Ability to lead a small team and communicate effectively

•Competent in data recording and use of herd management software

•Passionate about animal welfare and sustainable dairy farming

•Flexible, reliable, and willing to take initiative

•AI and foot-trimming skills desirable but not essential
