Stockperson job for grass and forage based Dairy Beef - West Berkshire

Stockperson required for expanding 1200 head grass based Dairy beef Enterprise to assist in the day to day running of new state of the art, fully automated youngstock unit. Work to include rearing up to 600 beef calves per year on milk and taking through to 6 months prior to turning out to grass. The majority of yearling cattle are outwintered on cover crops and brassicas with an expanding emphasis on fodder beet grazing on chalk based arable land.

Tasks to include: vaccinating, castration, dehorning, management of grazing groups and working alongside the owner and head stockman to plan further investment and improvements. Knowledge and enthusiasm of grassland management essential to help maximise the productivity of our grass and herbal leys. Ability to work on their own and be self motivated together with working as part of a wider team will be key to the success of the business. An interest in technology and willingness to embrace EID and digital record keeping is important with further training available where required. Must be a competent tractor driver to help with feeding and general grassland management together with experience of using a telehandler and feeder wagon.

In addition to the cattle, the business produces 16,000 Free Range Turkeys for the Christmas market. There is also an arable enterprise covering 1,700 acres alongside the livestock enterprises.

This role offers great career progression, there is substantial support within the business to aid training together with ongoing training available with local training group and vets. The team on the farm consist of 4 employees plus the owners: The livestock manager, senior stockman, arable foreman and arable assistant. The businesses is supplying beef direct to a national restaurant chain under a new initiative, closely following regenerative agricultural principals. We are currently involved in a couple of on farm trials, the first of which involves an mobile application to evaluate fat cattle and the second involving the new Collie "no fence" collars for managing grazing & outwintering livestock which starts in April 2027. Working hours at 7am - 5pm with a view to improving work life balance, rota is currently based on one weekend on and one weekend off.
