Farming background

April 2023 - present

Running a flock of 1700 mixed ewes and 120 ewe flock of pedigree Portlands, along with managing the smooth and efficient running of the staff team. The flock were under performing and the business was suffering, so a plan was developed and implemented, focusing on foot health, minerals and grazing according to ewes condition. This plan was a success and the condition of the ewes heading into lambing and significantly lower lamb mortality rates confirmed this. The majority of the grazing is on rented ground, especially in winter, so a large amount of electric fencing is undertaken to a high standard. Liaised with landlords and payments discussed, amount calculated and relevant paperwork completed.

Also had involvement with the small suckler herd of Aberdeen Angus cattle and a small amount of involvement with arable operations

January 2023 - present

Assisting with the running of 800 ewes (Cheviot mules, Belclares and Aberdales) and 4000 store lambs. Performance recording using a Shearwell stock recorder. Electric fencing of grassland, cover crops, catch crops and cereals with Rappa ATV and RTV winders. Undertaking knapsack spraying to manage grassland and for maintaining long standing electric fence lines.

June 2021 - September 2024

Working with pedigree Dorset Downs, Poll Dorsets and Dorset Horns, undertaking all usual sheep husbandry jobs with a Pratley mobile handling system and Ritchie combi clamp. Preparing grassland and herbal leys for mob grazing, using a Rappa ATV winder and barrow winder. Preparing and showing to a high standard

March 2021 - July 2022

Assisting the flock owners with day to day sheep husbandry on a pedigree flock of roughly 250 Lleyns and 30 Hampshire Downs. Showed and preparing both breeds for many shows and sales, along with helping choose and prepare the Lleyn rams for inspection. A small amount of permanent stock fencing also took place
