I was born in South African and raised on a Dairy Farm. From a very young age I helped my father run the farm before moving to England in May 2001. Then after working in London for approximately three years I realised how much I missed farming. I then applied for a job on a Farm, Marlborough as a Stockman/Relief Milker working on low yielding herd (6,500 litres) until September 2009. The owner then retired; the farm was taken over and it is he whom I worked for as a Stockman/Relief Milker/Young Stock person on a high yielding Waitrose herd (10,500 - 11,000 litres) until 2012 when we took on another farm which I helped set up as a spring calving, grazing farm(approximately 350 cows in milk) where I was promoted to herdsman until August 2016.
The list of previous jobs on both farms are as follows: Milking-Herringbone parlour, TMR feeding Machinery maintenance, managing young stock (birth to two years)- general health, feeding, de-horning, monitoring growth to achieve two year calving, tagging & diagnosing and treating illnesses with vet assistance. Calving cows, treating milk fever & making sure that all calves receive colostrum Diagnosing and treating mastitis in dry and dairy herd. Diagnosing, treating lameness and mobility scoring. Heat detection, AI and monitoring cows are cycling after calving, Record keeping of all the above. General farm work
