I come from a 40 cow suckler farm at home where I have a big part in running along with my dad. I completed an advanced level 6 in agriculture in Ballyhaise Agricultural college in 2021. It was in Ballyhaise that I gained a lot of experience and knowledge which has helped me not only at running my home farm but in any jobs Ive had since. I completed 8 weeks of work experience on a dairy farm milking 200 cows, I was also responsible for calf rearing, dosing, and other general work such as cleaning. I started at 7am every day and was always on time and had everything ready to go for milking to start at half 7. I completed a 16-week placement on a Sheep farm with 900 lowland ewes where I assisted with lambing in March and carrying out dosing, feeding, cleaning etc. I worked the rest of the summer of 2021 on this farm doing sheep work such as dosing and weaning along with packing eggs and carrying out all the checks for all the 1600 hens. I gained a lot of experience from this placement as I had never had much experience with sheep before this and was given lots of responsibility which helped me gain a good understanding of sheep. Over the last year Ive been working on a 550-cow dairy farm in county Roscommon. The farm is a 700-acre farm with a 54-unit rotary parlour situated in the middle of the land. Spring calving cows and all cows are AI'd with 3 Hereford bulls let out for the last few weeks of breeding just to clean up. Its on this farm that I feel I have gained the most of my experience as I have been given a wide range of jobs to do throughout the time I have been there. Anything from milking cows, to feeding calves, calving cows to sorting the paperwork for calf registrations, cleaning, and power washing to filling out bord bia paperwork.
