Other equipment experience

I have done 3 harvests at a Farm in Hampshire. I have learnt a lot during my time there thanks to their operation including a seed processing plant and their cropping involves a significant range of varieties of grass seed too.

Whilst at the farm the jobs I carried out were: Corn cart, Rolling, Topping, Loading/Grain movement, Repairs and Maintenance. I also had a small amount of spraying and combining experience/training.

Since post harvest 2020, I worked for an agricultural contractor. I drove a tractor on a dumper trailer for a muck away job for a few weeks and I also was fencing on a big contract for a polo yard.

I am someone who has always picked up new skills and tasks quickly, which I think is partly down to my sporting ability which has developed my coordination. I have completed a restoration of a 1962 Fordson Super Major up to show condition after it was parked in a hedge for 7 years, and I am currently doing another one.

I have done some ploughing, aerating, chain harrowing and seed broadcasting myself at my small holding as I have recently planted a herbal leys.

From a very young age I have had a love for machines, tractors, motorbikes, and building things. My Grandad had a successful welding company and he has taught most of what I know, along with building my confidence in carrying out work

Other livestock experience

I set up a small holding in December 2017, whilst in my second year at Oxford Brookes University. I have a small flock of Dorset Down sheep, and I have Aylesbury and Welsh Harlequin Ducks. I sell produce direct to the consumer and I carry out all the operations myself. I threw myself into the deep end by buying in lamb ewes with a week before they were due, without any experience with handling sheep or lambing before. I had done my research and I am always confident in my ability no matter what the task is as I think of myself as a problem solver.

I am looking for a mainly arable position, however, I am keen to learn about other livestock if the job requires my involvement with them on an occasional basis.

Farming background

I am not from a farming back ground, however, I have developed a love and passion for agriculture starting from a young age. Some people may see this as a disadvantage but personally I believe it to be highly advantageous in an industry that is very set in its ways of "this is how we have always done it". I have learnt more about farming business processes from my few years of running a small holding than anyone studying at a college or university could. This was the main purpose of the small holding, to give me full on hands on experience of everything.

I have developed my wider knowledge from my time at the farm in Hampshire, by being keen to learn and to know how and why things are done certain ways. I increased my knowledge further in a more in depth way at the Royal Agricultural Uni and to keep me up to date with changes and new advancements in the industry I am regularly reading.

I understand that on paper my experience on farm is a bit lacking, however I learn new skills a lot faster than others and I feel I have a wider range of abilities with added value to the overall business.

I was training to be a business consultant previously like my father is, but my love for farming outweighs an office. In a perfect world I would find a position that allows me to get to know my role and in time allow me to be involved in decision making and be a valued part of the team. I would love the opportunity to incorporate my business qualifications into my role and help make a difference to the overall business. I am able to carry out partial budgets, business plans, and help develop 3 way cash flow to reduce risk and improve profitability.
