My current employment at a Farm in Aberdeenshire sees me working as part of a team of two. I manage the 1200 Romney sheep, lambing outdoors and rearing all progeny through to breeding or slaughter, whilst assisting the other member of staff with the 200 head of spring calving Stabiliser cattle. My duties involve all husbandry and welfare aspect of the flock alongside grazing management both at home and at off-farm grazing locations for weaned lambs and wintering of breeding stock. This requires some use of technology such as a plate meter for grass measuring during rotational grazing and use of a Te-Pari Racewell and Shearwell handheld device for measuring and recording treatments, growth rates and animal weights. I have acquired both my ATV and Telehandler licenses through LANTRA. I have two working sheep dogs, one purchased part-trained and one purchased as a pup and trained by myself with the assistance of Aberdeenshire Sheepdogs. I also have a young dog waiting to begin training. Whilst assisting with the cattle I have used a variety of equipment, a Claas telehandler and tractors, Teagle bale processor for bedding and a BvL mixer wagon to deliver the cattle's daily rations and a Topper for pasture management. This aspect has also required organising contractors to assist us in silage, wholecrop and bale production and carting. With such a small team, a positive attitude, good team working and efficient organizing of day to day tasks is key to my routine.

My Agriculture BSc from Aberystwyth University has covered multiple topics from Livestock Production and Animal Nutrition; to Grassland Management, Crop Production, Farm Planning and Business. This broad spectrum of modules required the usage of a wide variety of software too, such as SPSS for statistical analysis and Excel for accounting in the business module. This degree, coupled with my real-world experiences, has given me a wide range of experience and system knowledge across the agriculture industry.

As part of my chosen career path and degree, I worked on a variety of farms for several years, whilst in education. These experiences have consisted of five years at a sheep farm in Derbyshire, during the lambing period. I carried out work within an indoor lambing system, preparation of ewes for lambing and various husbandry and vaccinations. I have also spent time at a mixed farm which involved working with turkeys, sheep, beef, chickens and horses. This consisted of all day to day tasks, in addition to helping the onsite butchery with the killing and plucking of turkeys. This enabled me to visit an abattoir and see the process of going from live animal to prepared carcass, giving some context to the farming system.

As part of a placement year within my degree, I was offered employment at a notable ram breeder in New Zealand. I accepted this opportunity and temporarily relocated to the lower North Island a few months later. This job was farming based with most of my time involving stock work with additional farm and land maintenance as part of the wider farm team. During the ram selling period in November, farm owners and managers came to the farm to select and purchase stock. I was greatly involved with the selling process and personally aided these customers in buying their chosen rams. During this time, my tasks included communicating directly with the clients by explaining and presenting data whilst aiding them on their visual choices. This was a fantastic learning opportunity and I thoroughly enjoyed living on the farm and adapting to the rural community out in New Zealand.

Past employment on a sheep, beef and poultry farm in Mid-Wales provided a good overview of the wider Agricultural industry. The business purchased store lambs and cattle to fatten for sale, with my main role being the welfare and growth of the sheep. I also completed few days a week at the poultry unit egg-packing and carry out bird health and welfare checks.sdw12d
