Farming background

2012-2015 Senior Herdsman on an Estate, Hampshire. I was employed to effectively supervise the development of herd health and numbers of a 270 pedigree Holstein herd and a further 100 beef cattle including the purchase and sale of both livestock and machinery. To oversee and make decisions concerning the day to day running of the dairy and beef unit operation and to manage the performance of farm staff. To ensure the upkeep and deployment of all dairy facilities and resources to a very high standard, making suggestions/recommendations on budget requirements and running costs.

2001-2012 Head Herdsman, Somerset. Due to the retirement of the Head Herdsman after 35 years I was contacted to take over this role. I was responsible for all aspects of running a 200 Holstein Fresian dairy and beef unit. I also carried out all the daily book keeping and record keeping of the farm. During this time I successfully implemented new systems which changed the herd from zero grazing to a grazing herd concentrating on lowering the cost of production whilst improving milk yield and health of the herd in particular by dramatically reducing the incidence of lameness within the herd.

1997-2001 Herdsman/machinery operator Somerset which was a family run dairy and beef farm, my responsibilities were to maintain all pasture land and I was involved in all aspects of advising and running of the 100+ Bristish Friesian herd and rearing of dairy young stock and beef cattle.

1993-1997 Trainee Herdsman, Somerset . I was trained in all aspects of the daily running of the farm from milking the dairy cows, calf rearing and the daily management of the Beef fattening unit. During this time I learnt about all the necessary daily record keeping and required paper work, and also through the seasons helped on the agri-contracting side of the business. After completing my training I moved to another farm to gain experience in a different management system.
