Other livestock experience

I worked on mixed dairy and beef livestock farms in Ukraine, on units of around 500 head of cattle, using Ukrainian farm equipment. I handled a range of cattle breeds, including dairy breeds such as Holstein and Ukrainian Whitehead, and dual-purpose beef-dairy breeds such as Simmental and Swiss Brown. I fed and reared calves, at times being responsible for up to 200 at once. I also have experience with Romanov sheep, a black fur-type breed, and Saanen dairy goats, and I am able to trim the hooves of sheep and goats. I have worked in both herringbone and tandem milking parlours, covering milking routines, hygiene and equipment operation. I have helped with calving, and with the lambing and kidding of sheep and goats.

Beyond this farm work, I grew up around livestock: my grandparents kept cows, horses, goats, sheep, pigs, rabbits and poultry, and my parents still keep sheep and poultry today. Until 2022, I looked after my parents' sheep and the rest of their smallholding on my own every year while they were away, so I am used to taking full responsibility for animal welfare and making sound decisions independently. After school I also spent two years studying agricultural machinery and equipment, including equipment for livestock care and methods of housing and feeding.

Farming background

I have a practical livestock background: worked on mixed dairy/beef farms in Ukraine (500 head), handling multiple cattle breeds, Romanov sheep, Saanen goats, herringbone and tandem parlours, hoof trimming, and calf rearing (up to 200 at a time); helped with calving, lambing and kidding. Alongside this, I bring 20+ years as a maintenance technician and engineer in aviation and offshore power generation, giving me strong mechanical skills, discipline and reliability that transfer well to farm equipment and animal care.
