Farm Veterinary Placement | Amethi Vets

This voluntary placement with Amethi Vets gave me thorough experience with a range of livestock, equestrian and other working animals. My experience ranged from high-stakes appointments including Caesareans and treating Adder bites to routine TB testing, castrations and helping to diagnose Cushings and EMS in a Shetland pony. This placement helped me understand and apply drug specifics, health and welfare legislation and relationship development in practice.

This full-time position required the twice a day milking of 220 Holstein Friesians, assisting in autumn calving and rearing of dairy heifers and angus bulls. Fencing, machinery maintenance and other daily farm jobs were also required. The farm also worked alongside an agricultural consultant and vet practice to ensure the cows received the best care.

This position required the milking of 200 Holstein cows twice a day and the rearing of Holstein, British blue and Angus calves all year round.
