Livestock Equipment & Handling:
- 1,000L Milk Taxi Operations: Able to navigate the 1,000L taxi and quad bike trailers through tight shed entries with only a couple of inches of clearance. Also responsible for the daily operation, calibration, and deep cleaning of the 50-teat feeding systems.
Data & Weight Management: Managed the calf-weighing process independently. This included selecting the stock, capturing all weights via electronic weighers, and building a custom reporting spreadsheet to track growth - a system developed to provide the Farm Manager with clear, professional data.
- Stock Loading: Assisted in the drafted loading of beef calves for lorry transport, ensuring accurate headcounts and low-stress movement.
Mechanical Maintenance & Repairs:
- Troubleshooting: Practical experience keeping the milk taxi running by addressing battery issues, spark plugs, and replacing worn seals.
- Plumbing & Fabrication: Capable of repairing burst pipes and water system failures under pressure. Used angle grinders and hand tools to modify gates or fix equipment, including using plastic soldering to seal leaks in machinery.
Biosecurity & Cleaning:
- Deep-Cleaning Protocols: Executed rigorous cleaning to eliminate disease. Used industrial pressure washers and specialised chemicals, including peracetic acid for cleaning feeding teats and a backpack sprayer for disinfecting pens after moving stock.
- Footbath Maintenance: Responsible for the daily management and replenishment of footbaths using kilcox to maintain site biosecurity.
Managed 22 pens independently for a 500-calf unit, reporting directly to the Farm Manager. Responsible for the daily execution of neonatal care and biosecurity protocols.
Performance & Results:
- 2.1% Mortality Rate (including calves who has difficulty births and weren't expected to make it as a result): Successfully beat the UK industry average of 8%.
- 2.7% Morbidity Rate: Maintained low sickness levels through disciplined pen hygiene.
- 0.8kg Average DLWG: Achieved consistent growth across multiple breeds (Holsteins, Jerseys, Ayrshire).
Stockmanship & PHAI:
Using my equine background, I leaned heavily into "calf-talking" and consistent presence to build trust with livestock. This approach removed calve flight zones, making them significantly easier to handle, treat and move without stress.
Resilience & Grit:
Winter Operations: Managed the unit through -4C Scottish winter mornings during peak block calving.
Endurance: Proven all-weather grit from a solo 866km trek of the Pyrenees (48,000m elevation), the Cape Wrath Trail and a 3 month London to Warsaw and back cycle tour.

I was raised with lifelong exposure to livestock through my familys farming operations (Ada Coles), which provided a foundational stockmans eye and early competency with machinery and animal husbandry.
This foundation was further developed through extensive work with horses. I voluntaryily worked with horses in an equine husbandry role whilst resschooling them, and owned my own British Warmblood for 4 years. This gave me the ability to read animal behavior and manage flight zones, skills that I now apply to dairy stock through low-stress handling.
After a period in the corporate sectorwhere I developed high-level skills in operational strategy, reporting, and team managementI returned to livestock management. Most recently, I served as the Assistant Youngstock Manager, where I was given sole responsibility for the daily operation of a 500-calf block calving unit.
Key Achievements:
- Health & Survival: Maintained a 2.1% mortality rate (inclusive of difficult/assisted births) against a UK industry average of 8%.
- Disease Prevention: Achieved high health standards with minimal clinical treatments required for pneumonia or scour through disciplined biosecurity.
- Operational Scale: Managed 22 pens independently, reporting directly to the Farm Manager.
- Stockmanship (PHAI): Implemented "calf-talking" and low-stress handling. By drawing on my equine experience to reduce flight zones, I ensured calves remained calm, making them significantly easier to handle, treat, and move.
I am a disciplined, honest operator looking for a role on a progressive unit where performance and high standards of animal welfare are the priority.
