I have previously worked on a part-time basis on a mixed farm as a tractor driver and undertook duties including power harrowing, discing, rolling, topping and carting. I also worked part-time on a rare breeds farm where I was responsible for the morning mucking out, bedding up, feeding and welfare checks on a range of animals including reindeer, camel, emu and rhea.
My college course has given me valuable insight into farming as an industry and as a way of life, and has left me keen to learn more about sustainable farming practices, crop management, and the importance of environmental conservation in agriculture. I am particularly interested in the technology that is used on farms.
Other work experience includes:
Building exhibition spaces, props and staging for a public event at the Key Theatre, multi-tasking across several projects to a very tight schedule.
Shadowing an arable farmer for the day, I learned the importance of health and safety in a potentially dangerous environment.
Shadowing a sheep farmer for the day, I understood the need for a strong work ethic and putting welfare first.
Across several half-day events, I listened carefully to instructions so that I could effectively support young children during practical learning activities at Children's University events.
