Other livestock experience

I grew up on a dairy farm which gave me the opportunity to get involved with the livestock, showing calves at the age of 9. I started lambing at 14 on a local farm with 4000 mules. I was on the YTS scheme until the shepherd left and then I took on the responsibility for 1000 mules. In my sandwich year from Lackham College, I worked on a farm on Exmoor with 1000 Cheviots and 100 Welsh Black cattle.

When I left college in 1990 I took on responsibility for 600 Scotch Half Breds on an arable farm near Bath. That was followed by my first farm managers position looking after 300 mules and Polled Dorset's and rearing 80 dairy x calves yearly.

I then moved to a farm near Crediton in Devon caring for 500 Polled Dorset's and Mules, plus a herd of South Devon cattle. In 2002 i moved to a large estate in the Cotswolds starting with a small flock of Lleyns and 150 angus suckler herd . The flock increased to 2000 over the 8 years with the involvement of Innovis improving the flocks genetics to high standard which improved motherability and reduced lamb mortality .

In 2009 i became farm manager for an estate where we ran 1000 pedigree Lleyns. From 2021 to 2025 I managed two farms near Sevenoaks and Edenbridge in Kent, looking after a pedigree herd of traditional Herefords and 200 Romneys and Lleyns regeneratively.

I am currently Stock Manager on a farm in Shropshire looking after a flock of Lleyns and a suckler hear of South Devons on an organic system.
