I was born in Derbyshire, although my father was originally from a farming family in Wiltshire, I didnt grow up in a farming environment. However I spend most school holidays on my Grandfathers Wiltshire farm milking 120 Jerseys.
For a considerable amount of time I had the objective of having a career in the Army, however while at university I became a father which changed my outlook on the career I wished to have.
Therefore after university I started working on my Grandfathers farm at this time the business was handed over to my Uncle. Although I really enjoyed my time with family I was limited in the sense of progression and options for self-development.
I thus moved to a farm in Ashbourne, firstly I was an assistant Herdsman but after a member of staff leaving I stepped up to Herdsman. Milking 500 pedigree Holsteins. During my time in this role I really developed myself competing numerous courses and qualifications.
However in 2023 I made the decision to move to my current employers. The main reason being progression but also the role came with on farm accommodation which wasnt something i previously had.
In my current role I am the assistant herd manager. This role includes leading milkings, foot trimming, AI, condition scoring, calf rearing, dry cow management, data entry on uniform agri, paddock and grass allocation, working alongside the farm manager and owner as well as vets and consultants.
