General Farm Worker - Working on a 800 dairy unit has given me the opportunity to strengthen my animal handling techniques as well as other vital skills needed for working on a farm. Working two week shifts in all weathers, I am used to the long hours which are essential for the round the clock care of the cows.
Being a lairage operative has enhanced my passion for animal welfare as well as given me the opportunity to be more vigilant when looking for some illnesses. Attention to detail in this role has been a must as when reading ear tags, it is essential they marry up to the correct passports to ensure the food chain is not disrupted and that farmers are paid correctly for their individual cattle.
Livestock work experience - I have had the opportunity of working on a small holding with a variety of livestock, including pigs, goats, cows and chickens.
• Completing daily tasks such as feeding, health checks, replenishment of bedding and upkeep of living accommodations.
• Other tasks include preparation of cattle fields (semi permanent fencing and removal of weeds such as ragwort), the herding and transportation of cattle.
• Pig artificial insemination: Serving gilts and sows when they show signs of being in heat, repeating the process to increase chance of pregnancy.
• Aiding in the process of goat vaccination.
• Potato grading with a good eye to ensure no foreign objects make it into pallets which can cause issues when storing.
