In my current role as Livestock Manager, I am responsible for a Fold of twenty Pedigree highland cows and followers with Elite Health status and a flock of 550 Lleyn sheep both bred for pedigree and meat sales. This role has involved me taking ownership of highland cattle fold, carrying out effective culling and purchasing to develop a functional and profitable pedigree fold. This has included all associated animal welfare tasks such as calving, worming and blood testing. To build upon this management I have used showing as a shop window for selling breeding stock. Achievements including: • Junior Champion -Great Yorkshire Show 2014 • Breed Champion and reserve native interbreed – Rutland Show 2015 • Reserve Breed Champion – Norfolk 2016 • Male Champion – Great Yorkshire Show 2017 • Overall male Champion- Oban February 2017 with Cameron Dubh of Kelby selling for 6500gns • Private export of Legend of Kelby- February 2018 to Germany for £5000 • Breed Champion at both North of England Highland Cattle club show 2018 and Royal Norfolk show 2018 with Wendreda Dubh 1st of Kelby To maintain these standards I have introduced artificial insemination into the breeding programme using semen from old prize winning bulls to widen the gene pool. These calve in January therefore if they do not hold can fit back into normal calving pattern of February/March. The Kelby Lleyn flock is all MV accredited both the pedigree and commercial sheep making management easier and flock health better. All associated tasks to maintain a flock with high health and welfare such as worming, feeding and vaccinations are under my management. Lambing takes place inside, during February with roughly three hundred pedigree Lleyns for replacement and pedigree sales. Then in March the rest are crossed to a charollais, texels and suffolks for prime lambs. I am responsible for managing one permanent member of staff to ensure the smooth running of all operations. Sales of both fat lambs and pedigree stock including rams, are selected and organised by me to gain the best profit from the flock. All these skills could easily be transferred. I currently run two working sheepdogs. Therefore I understand their importance in the day to day management of a flock. All paper work required for Farm Assurance, DEFRA and BCMS when keeping both cattle and sheep are my responsibility for T.P Radford using the Psion pro handheld EID reader and Farmworks software package by Sherwell Data, something which I feel is a useful management tool not just for movements and medicines but for pedigrees and Estimated Breeding Values (EBV’s). EBV’s are a good management tool for improving the genetics which need to be considered when trying to produce the most efficient animals possible. Understanding and following pedigrees for all breeds I have been involved with, has been of great interest and very beneficial for me to develop my ability to breed better animals. EBV’s are an important tool when helping to select both breeding females and sires, but never taking away the use of the eye just adding to effective selection
