Use of John Deere tractors, spraying fruit trees and vegetables, ploughing, discing, towing trailers,planting and lifting potatoes. I moved fruit and vegetables between farms using 10-tonne lorries. I spent several working holidays on a hop farm driving a Massey Ferguson tractor and cutting hops. Whilst I was working on the construction of store cattle sheds I used a range of machinery including Manitou, 360 dumper truck, loader and front end loader. I used a 360 with grab attachment to move large building materials around the site and jack hammer attachment to break up concrete. I used a Fasttrac to move soil around the building site. For several months during a strike at Woodlands Dairy I used a Forklift and high-lift to load processed dairy products on to 36 tonne taut-liner and flat-bed trucks. I have experience of using a Tele-handler for scraping, bedding up and feeding store cattle using a silage block cutter. I used a Ford TW-15 and mower to carry out pasture management. I used a post-knocker for planting fencing posts, and tomato supports. I have a Yamaha Grizzly 350 4WD quad bike that I used daily to check on livestock in mountainous terrain, or with a trailer to take lick and supplements to feeding points. I have experience of welding and basic mechanical maintenance. I have experience of fencing, and laying water pipes.

I owned and took care of herd of beef suckler cattle and flock of sheep from 2007 until their sale in 2016. I also managed 150 suckler cows belonging to someone else. I carried out all daily management tasks for the herd including tagging, castrating, branding (freeze and hot-branding), de-horning, and inoculations. I kept stringent records of calvings and medicines administered. I am qualified in AI,and in my current role carry out between 15 and 50 AI's per day. I am qualified as a DEFRA approved bovine ultrasound pregnancy scanner, and have scanned part time for the past couple of years. I am qualified in bovine foot trimming. Experienced in assisting with difficult calvings. I spent two years relief milking on alternate weekends for an AYR calving, pasture based Jersey herd. I was responsible for preparing the dairy ready for milkings, and carrying out the twice-daily milkings. I checked the general health of the herd and reported any problems to the farmer. In my role as Extension Officer for a large dairy processing company I assisted farmers regularly with taking samples for SSC and bacterial counts. During 2007 I assisted with the rearing of 400 dairy and dairy-cross calves, including feeding, tagging, castrating, de-horning and administering medicines. The dairy calves were reared as replacement heifers and store steers for a local farmer, and the dairy-cross heifers became a part of the early suckler herd, and were crossed to beef sires. I had a small flock of 30 Dohne Merino ewes, that I carried out all daily management tasks for including tagging lambs, castrating and docking tails using an elastrator, inoculations, foot-trimming, and hand-shearing.I also have some experience of poultry and pigs, as I kept 100 free-range layers, and raised weaner piglets to slaughter weight for home use, and for sale.

Although I have spent the past few years working as a transport manager in the dairy industry, farming is my first interest, and I managed a large herd of beef cattle successfully in my spare time. I am looking to settle full-time into a farming role.I am hard-working and dedicated. I have a passion for farming, and would like to develop my skills to become an asset to a farming enterprise.

Farming background

I have been involved in farming my whole life, having grown up on a mixed dairy and arable farm. I spent school holidays driving tractors on local vegetable farms. I have been involved with farming to some extent, even when my main job has not been livestock based, as that is where my main interest lies. I farmed part-time with a beef herd and small flock of sheep in South Africa. I have extensive experience of artificial insemination as a bovine fertility technician. I carried out ultrasound scanning commercially in South Africa. 10 years as manager of a citrus, vegetable and potato farm in South Africa.


I am interested in Rugby and used to play at local club level in both England and South Africa. I also enjoy fishing, game-hunting and woodwork, and have designed and built a lot of my own furniture.
