Herdsperson Job for progressive spring-calving herd <:>Cumbria<:>

Farm TypeDairy

This role is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual of any age or experience who is keen to take the next step in their dairy career within a progressive business.

Dairy experience is desirable, but not essential.  Much more important is a positive attitude alongside a willingness to learn and constantly challenge yourself.

We are extremely passionate about grass-based dairy farming and convinced that there will be huge opportunities for positive people throughout our industry. We are therefore keen to support our staff to develop their knowledge & career in whatever way most helps them to support their personal & career goals.  In return for your hard work, we will provide significant training & professional development, regular involvement in farm management and strategy via weekly team meetings, as well as any other support required to help develop your career.  We have access to a wide network of like-minded progressive farmers and top-level research which can be used as a valuable resource for professional development.

The role is available for immediate start.

We are a family run dairy farm, near Penrith, Cumbria, in the heart of the idyllic Eden Valley, with stunning views of the Pennines.  We are only 5 minutes from the M6, and have easy access to the Lake District.  We run 320 spring-calving NZ-bred Jersey and Friesian cows on 240ha on a low-input NZ style system, with cows grazing 280-300 days/year.  Cows are milked through a modern 24:48 herringbone parlour, which is great to work in, and we are currently updating our existing infrastructure to ensure daily work is as straightforward as possible for our team. Replacements are reared on farm, and a proportion of the dry cows out-wintered on fodder beet & bales.

We are committed to a simple system which achieves exceptional levels of technical performance and maintaining a good quality lifestyle for all team members.  We place a particular emphasis on breeding high quality grazing cattle and excellent grassland management. We have built up a strong reputation for both of these, and due to the high genetic merit of the herd, we have been able to rear a significant number of dairy bulls for service and sale across the UK.

Working as a key member of a small team you would be:

Responsible for milking duties, ensuring:

o High standards of milk and parlour hygiene

o Careful monitoring of herd and individual animal health

o Appropriate drug treatments, where necessary, are administered and recorded correctly

o Cows requiring insemination, foot trimming or other attention are identified correctly

o All animals are handled calmly and with excellent attention to detail

Involvement in stock rearing and management to ensure:

o Successful/safe delivery of calves (where necessary), colostrum feeding etc

o High-quality calf rearing

o High levels of stock care and management

Significant involvement in ensuring excellent grassland management throughout the year including regular pasture measurement.

Opportunity to be heavily involved in the discussion and formation of farm strategy during regular meetings with the farm managers.

Required to bring an enthusiastic and self-motivated approach to the range of day to day, general farm duties, as directed by the farm managers.

Expected to bring an enthusiastic & committed approach to professional development.

The role would average approximately 55 hours/week, with the usual seasonal variation expected in a spring-calving system.  Evening checks during calving & mating season are shared between the team.
