Description

Description of position

We are looking for someone to join our team on a family farm.  We are an arable farm with permanent pasture rented out as grazing for beef cattle and sheep. We have 250ha of arable, 100ha permanent pasture, woodland & rental properties.  The role includes mainly arable work & machinery maintenance, farm maintenance, fencing, basic checking of livestock etc.  This is an active physical role within a small team incorporating a variety of skills.  We need someone with good fieldwork skills who can operate both modern and older machinery.  Spraying, combining and drilling experience are essential.  We look after our machinery well, take pride in our work and are hoping to find someone who has a similar approach.  Good time management and the ability to work alone as well as part of the team are essential.  We use modern technology in addition to traditional methods, we do not use autosteer.

Standard hours 7.30am – 4.30pm (3.30pm on Fridays) with 1 hour unpaid lunch.

Weekend checking of livestock rotates between staff.  Overtime during busy periods and of course during harvest when it’s ready to be cut, we just get on with it!

Experience Required

Arable Work:  This must include spraying, cultivation, record keeping, telehandler experience, drilling & combining.

Machinery maintenance:  Mechanical knowledge required; will need to perform regular maintenance, assess any repairs needed, fix where possible, order parts and liaise with outside technicians if necessary.  Most importantly a calm head when things break down!

Other Information

The farm is all in one block so we rarely drive on the main roads.  Minimum tillage, challenging black grass, variety of soil types, mostly flat.  We use contractors for big baling & maize but do most everything else ourselves.  We built a new grain store a few years ago and have invested in some new machinery.  However, we still use a range of older machines and rather enjoy the variety.

We have rental properties on the farm and in the local village.  Farm workers don’t usually have much to do with that side of the business but we are always happy to pop round with a telehandler bucket for tenants if they are having a garden tidy.  Generally just a quiet, friendly small community.

We rent the grazing to our neighbour for his livestock – we keep an eye on them but don’t get involved in TB testing / Vet etc.  During lambing we usually house some of the cattle to help him out so there is some feeding and bedding up to do then.

1.5 miles from M40, 2 miles from Watlington (school, shops, pubs, curry house), 9 miles from Thame (bigger variety of shops & restaurants).  Local pub (very friendly, great food) 20 minute walk, best pizza for miles a short drive away, ridgeway and lots of other footpaths / bridleways nearby.
