Herdsperson Job with a 500 cow herd 1200 acre farm <:>Central Norfolk<:>

Farm TypeArable, Dairy

Due to a valued employee leaving to pursue their own business an opportunity has arisen to work as part of a team in a well invested modern pedigree Holstein herd.

You will be required to work as part of a team to carry out day to day jobs involved with the 500 cow unit.  The role will involve a mixture of milking, feeding and general stock tasks.  The dairy is an all year round calving pattern so there is a steady flow of jobs. We also put a large emphasis on making high quality forages and make our own forages using our own self propelled machine, tractors and trailers, etc.

Milking is carried out twice a day by a team of two in a modern 20:40 fulwood parlour. The parlour has milk meters and auto identification.  There is a parlour routine and we currently have good results for cleanliness and mastitis rates.  The cows are mainly housed on sand cubicles which are bedded 1-2 times a week and raked daily using the bobcat.

Feeder wagon work will involve the use of a loader and driving a keenan feeder wagon. The feeder wagon is fitted with keenan pace which you will be required operate. Accuracy and attention to detail are necessary.

The milking cows are monitored using cow manager ear tags and bred to either sexed/conventional holstein or beef and the maiden heifers are bred to sexed holstein. We carry out a routine vet visit weekly and all animals are handled in the head locking yokes.  There is a large emphassis placed on herd fertility.  We have a monthly team meeting to discuss issues on the farm and give input into the way the farm is ran.

The farm carries out its own arable work an at times you will be required to help the arable side of the business with tractor work.  This could be anything from trailer driving at harvest/silage times, straw carting, cultivating, muck/slurry spreading

High levels of livestock husbandry and the ability to work in a team are necessary.

Regular time off will be given within the staff rota 10 days on in every 14 plus holiday.
