College leaver-Trainee Herdsperson job in <=>South West<=>

We milk 150+ Jersey cows on a grass based system.  Predominantly spring block calving with a small portion of the herd to calve in the autumn.

The herd is expanding and we are looking to employ a trainee herdsperson.  This could suit someone who has just left agriculture college and looking for a career in dairy farming.

Currently the owner is the Herdsman and we have two relief milkers.  We’d like someone keen to learn and work alongside the owner with the desire to gradually progress to take on the responsibility for the herd.   He has over 30 years experience in dairy farming and enjoys sharing his experience.

The successful applicant will be expected to be hands-on with all tasks related to the health and well-being of the herd.  

Although not limited to- this includes milking twice per day, yard work, setting electric fences for grazing, cleaning parlour areas and equipment, minimal tractor work, bedding (in winter), AI, calving and so on.

Experience with dairy would be helpful, but not required. 

Personal Qualities- a positive can do attitude, willing to learn, attention to detail, reliable, punctual, desire to become a herdsman/woman, happy to work as part of a team and on your own.

Desired qualifications Level 3 in Agriculture or minimal equivalent.
