Exciting Opportunity In South Devon for a Herd manager for 280 Organic cows



We have an opportunity for a talented individual to take on our 280 Autumn block calving herd.  New unit under one roof.  Supplying own processing unit at Riverford farm. Experience of organics not essential but sympathy to the cause would be helpful

Job Purpose



•The profitable production of milk from 280 Autumn block calving cows, rearing of youngstock and calves.



•Ensure the milking herd provides milk of the quantity and quality for own processing unit



•A focus on good stockmanship and profitability, running a simple system focused on tight block calving and rotational paddock grazing.



Responsible for



•The leadership of a small team of full time employees plus a relief milker.



Duties and Responsibilities



•Day-to-day management of the cows and youngstock. The person would be expected to participate in the milking rota and  be fully  involved practically in the day to day work of the team.



•Management of the paddock grazing system using Agrinet and liaising with the owner on the production of conserved forage for the cows and youngstock.



•Feeding to achieve overall herd aims, including working with advisors to fulfil the agreed plan.



•Contributing to developing and implementing the agreed breeding policy to fulfil the aims of the business and ensure tight block calving; working with the advisor to achieve this.



•Responsible for team motivation, training, team work and a safe working environment.



 Good communication skills are essential.



•Contribution to developing and implementing the agreed long term strategies/policies/ cost effectiveness of the milk production side of the business



The person will ideally have experience in rotational grazing based milk production.



Good stockmanship is essential to ensure a high standard of herd health and welfare.



The successful candidate must have a positive attitude, be able to take responsibility, have high standards and be able to motivate and lead a team.
