Wanted - Experienced assistant herdsperson to join the 4-man dairy team at a farm in West Dorset.

The 480+ Holstein Friesian herd is year-round calving and has an average yield of over 8,500l/cow, are paddock grazed in the summer and fed a high maize diet in winter. The 20/40 GEA herringbone parlour has auto ID/seg and cluster flush and the unit has been invested in over the last 5 years to improve cow accommodation and comfort. The main duty is milking but the role also involves drying-off and calving, spotting bulling cows, identifying and treating sick animals as well as general yard work and night checks.

The job would be suitable for someone with at least a couple of years' lone milking experience, good basic cow health knowledge and is now looking to move on to a larger herd and build on their skill base. Applicants must be clean, competent milkers, have recent relevant experience, be a flexible team player and previous use of a computerised herd management software would be an advantage.

The assistant dairy staff work a rota system (averaging 45 hours/week) and the position comes with a rent-free house, pension and 16 days holiday a year all of which provides a good work/life balance. Technical training consistent with the position will also be provided to the right applicant.
