Job to assist the Head Shepherd in daily management <=>Hampshire<=>

Farm TypeSheep, Contractor

Before applying for this job you must be fully aware that Shepherding involves working anti social and sometimes long hours in a range of weather conditions and circumstances.  You will be well looked after but we are seeking someone who will commit long term to the Company as we develop and grow.  We are very aware that moving away from family, friends and social networks can be daunting so you will be encouraged to establish a new and different life with us in Hampshire.  You will be working with a team of people who will facilitate your learning and support you as you develop your position within the Company.

Your main duties will initially involve learning all about the Company's contracting operation and  supporting the Head Shepherd in his daily tasks.  Flock health and management are prime concerns but you will also be expected to turn your hand to fencing, flock checking and lambing.

You will be based on a mixed farming estate in Hampshire, situated midway between Newbury and Basingstoke.  The estates flock comprises 2000 breeding ewes run on a forage based system and lambing outdoors.  The flock is mob grazed behind both temporary and permanent electric fencing.  In addition you will gain experience of working with other flocks throughout the year and also tack ewes and lambs under the management of the Company.  The Company has its own flock of 600 primarily Exlana ewes and a sizeable flock of  Charmoise ewes which are located on a newly tenanted farm near Newbury.

Daily duties will involve the general shepherding of the Estate flock, electric fencing, checking outlying groups of sheep etc.  As you begin to learn more about the operation you will be expected and encouraged to accept more responsibility for your actions and work independently where required. If you commit to the company and its expanding business it is our hope that you will become an experienced and respected shepherd in your own right.

Ideally you will have a trained sheepdog capable of fetching and driving quite large flocks.  Alternatively we will provide you with a trained dog and help you develop the skills of competent dog handling.

This can be a permanent position if you demonstrate a willingness to commit to the Company and its expanding business.
