PRESENT Relief Farm Worker – January 2009 to date, Norway Responsibilities include: • The Norwegian government supports all farmers with relief cover for holidays and sickness. I am employed full time to provide this cover • I am responsible for relief cover for over 400 varied farms • Primarily working as a relief milker I also work on sheep, pig and beef farms • All aspects of farming including feeding, stock welfare, building/land/machine maintenance, tractor work, field tasks, record keeping • Farmers can be absent due to sickness for up to a year. On several of these occasions I've been responsible for the day to day running and control of the farm: maintaining and increasing milk yields, lowering cell counts and fertility and rearing excellent young stock. In most cases farmers have adopted my approach on their return • Farmers regularly ask for my advice and I gladly share my knowledge to help them achieve better results. Many implement my ideas for their farm set ups • Working on farms here in Norway has given me experience of very diverse range of setups from simple tie barns with no electronic or computerisation through to fully functional computerised and automated robot setups. Some examples include: o Milking up to 80 cows in a tie barn system o Running a twin robot setup and working with the 3 main leading robot manufacturers o Milking 110 cows through 20:20 herringbone • I have learnt that making managerial decisions whether it be for the animals or the farmer is a very fine line. Every situation with every farmer is different. I feel without exception I have made the right decisions for both and maintained good continued relationships with the farmers • I have worked with several breeds of cattle in Norway, principally Norwegian Red with a few Holsteins and Jersey Herds.
