Farming background

Employment – New Zealand I am currently coming to the end of an inspiring year working in New Zealand, learning more about the various farming practices and techniques used to utilise and manage predominantly grass-based livestock grazing systems. 2018 July – October: Grasslands Canterbury Ltd, Grasslands is a dynamic and progressive pasture-based dairy farming business focused on high profit milk production. During my time at Grasslands, I successfully managed a large-scale calf rearing unit. I was solely responsible for over 700 calves. This involved rearing all heifer calves for dairy replacements and preparing the dairy bull calves for sale. My duties were to hit target growth weights, keep good health status and facilitate a smooth transition to outdoors. 2018 October – Current : Upper Avon Faming Group (UAFG), UAFG consists of two high-country stations set in the Avon Valley, Marlborough. Running 4000 breeding ewes and 500 beef cows, Malvern Hills and The Teme make up 3500 hectares (9000 acres) of rolling hill country. My work on this farm has given me invaluable experience of the large scale, profitable management of a beef suckler and sheep farm in a simple grass-based system. My duties here include: • General livestock husbandry • Weighing calves and lambs using Trutest weigh systems and software • Operation and management of K-Line irrigation • Installation of a field livestock drinking water system for a whole farm • Fencing and repairs Employment – United Kingdom 2017 – 2018: Ashfield Farm, Head of land development and livestock. Ashfield is a developing hill farm located on the west coast of Scotland, running two flocks; one of Scottish Blackface ewes and another of home bred Scotch Mules serving as replacement ewes for breeding prime lamb. • I was in charge of developing land quality and improving livestock production • I took soil samples and arranged for them to be analysed, in turn allowing the correct application levels of lime and trace elements to the farm. • I introduced rotational grazing through the instillation of correctly located permanent fences alongside three line electric. • I introduced a Shearwell electronic tag scanning system to the farm, allowing us to efficiently monitor our ewes to gradually gain higher potential from the breeding stock. • I was responsible for the day to day running of the farm, including the sale and purchase of livestock, keeping clear and orderly records of livestock health and numbers along with records of movements and locations, ordering electric fencing gear, stock feed, any routine fence repairs, keeping record of machinery maintenance and performing regular maintenance to both tractors and atvs, working alongside the fencing contractor to ensure efficient use of time and prioritising fences In need of replacement. 2014 – 2017: Self-employed After leaving Hartpury College I became self-employed and worked for several farms, gaining a wide knowledge and experience of different farming techniques and systems including: • General sheep husbandry and day to day running a lambing shed. • Beef cattle general husbandry, and calving, • Calf rearing, day to day running and husbandry from day old through to finishing, • Growing, harvesting and processing of Hops – dwarf and standard • Contract hedge/verge cutting • Grassland management and cultivation • General arable cultivation • Fencing – electric and permanent • Minor ground works and excavations
