Carrying out milking and teat spraying, ensuring livestock health and welfare, maintaining the dairy, plant and equipment, to the standard outlined by the farm manager. Other tasks included feeding out and assisting with the preparing of feed, implementation of an effective weed control, assisting with farm walks to collect pasture growth information, crop establishment and fertilizer application. All of these responsibilities furthered my understanding and experience of dairy farming in a foreign environment. My role was to help muster 8000 merino ewes over 30,000 acres on horseback as well as foot, for shearing, dipping and drenching, sorted lambs for market. I also help source and purchase tupps for the new breeding season. I learned how to clip sheep the old fashion way, help research growing demand for diversification in the Southern Alps and how the station are looking to change sheep breeds to meet the growing world markets. Managing a flock of 1000 sheep indoor lambing.
