Farming background

Work History: Aug 2017 – current: Farm Manager. I am responsible for the management of all aspects of the Estate consisting of both arable and cattle. The pedigree Hereford herd are grass fed and I’m responsible for the grassland management of the 600 acre wetland marshes and the conservation areas that they encompass. There are 500 acres of arable land and a shoot that have to be managed by me harmoniously and profitably by me for the owner. Sept 2016 – 2017: Commercial Manager. My role was the procurement and sales of Fruit Trees and associated products across the whole of the UK. I sourced the trees from nurseries across Europe and then marketed them to customers across the UK. I travelled to Europe inspecting the trees to ensure that they met the exacting standards for UK growers. I visited growers and sourced and supplied the trees that they required. Orders varied from just a few trees to purchases of 40,000 plus. I liaised with growers, procurement specialists, Farm Managers and other industry specialists and developed a deep understanding of the needs of the industry. I was also responsible for the supply of Bio-Control products with the express aim of reducing pesticide. This part of my role also involved meeting growers and supplying the correct solution to resolve their problem. This work increased my profile within the farming community who often require specialist knowledge and products. My previous role at Haynes helped me fit easily into the fast paced high pressure role that involved dealing with farmers on a daily basis. May 2015 to Sept 2016: Arable and Operations Manager. I was a manager on a 1250 hectare estate of arable crops including wheat, oil seed rape and beans. The estate had extensive areas of fresh water wetland marshes that are RAMSAR sites designated as being of strategic international importance to wildlife. Responsibilities included: machinery purchase, vehicle and equipment maintenance, contracts management, budgeting, soil protection reviews, environmental schemes associated with BPS, SSSI, ESA, Leraps and the management of low intensity stocking on wetland marches and all cross compliance issues. As part of my role I also explored all avenues of farm expansion including contracting and the future development of the farm taking into account margin over input to ensure profitability. Part of the farm enterprise was the sale of straw to the UK and European customers. Sept 2012 – May 2015: Sales Executive in Agricultural and construction machinery sales, I covered large areas of Kent and the surrounding areas and dealt with farmers, land agents, site managers and large-scale contractors on a daily basis. This involved developing relationships with customers, demonstrating machinery, delivering machinery and ensuring its correct use. The use of IT equipment for preparing quotes, invoices, research and record keeping also the supply of product literature. Mar 2011 to Sept 2012: Trainee Agronomist June 1997 to Mar 2011: Working Arable, Fruit and Operations Manager - Farm, Kent Management of 1150 hectares of arable crops, Wheat, OSR, Peas, Beans, Kale and Forage crops. I was responsible for the grassland management and reseeding for the large livestock enterprise. I also was in control of budgeting, machinery purchases, vehicle and equipment maintenance, contracts management, soil protection reviews, environmental schemes associated with BPS, SSSI, ESA, Leraps and the management of low intensity stocking on wetland marshes and all cross-compliance issues. I was responsible for the smooth coordination of resources (including Human Resources) and direct line management of the arable team and seasonal workers of various nationalities. I was also responsible for management of their fruit enterprise until the arable grew to a size that prevented me from effective sole day to day management of the fruit. Once this happened I still had a fully active role working with the fruit manager and his staff, helping supervise pruning, picking, storage, spraying and the implementation of advice from the agronomist and fruit specialists. May 1992 to June 1997: Farm Foreman on a 500 hectare arable farm growing cereals, legumes, OSR and sugar beet. In addition to this, I was involved with the farm hosting a trial for a major international seed house. Apart from all crop husbandry, my responsibilities included actively assisting the cereal trials for the seed house as well as on farm trials. Achievements: • Managed 1150 HA of arable crops improving the wheat yield to 20% above UK average. Careful analysis and extensive knowledge of the market enabled me to sell crop varieties maximising price to quality to a range of end users. • The effective and efficient planning and use of resources including management of a large team of seasonal workers, vehicle and equipment maintenance and deployment and use and deployment of contracted operators and equipment. • Excellent Health & Safety management with 100% record over 15 years. Interests: walking, bird watching and environmental issues. References: available on request.
