Farming background

currently responsible for all livestock and day to day management of a mixed, new farm on the remote Shetland Island of Fetlar. This includes a commercial flock of about 600 ewes, a small pedigree flock of Suffolks, a flock of about 300 Shetlands farmed on a hill share and a smaller flock of Blackfaces. I’m also responsible for about 30 pigs and 60 cows which include shorthorns, galloways and highlands as well as some crossbreds. As the farm is in it’s early years this has given me the opportunity to improve not only the livestock but also the infrastructure of the farm such as building work (concreting, roofing, shed design, handling system design) and grassland improvements. As head stockman I have had the opportunity to develop flock and herd health plans. I have been responsible for all the usual stock care and land rotation for grazing and silage as well as management of all breeding regimes, calving, farrowing and lambing and the small team of helpers.
