I have been heavily involved in New Zealand Young Farmers for the past 7 years. Within this time frame I have volunteered in many roles, including club chairman, district chairman, regional chairman and as a board member/director of the national organisation. In my time working as a dairy farm consultant I received certification in a number of areas, including advanced nutrient management, rural governance and cow condition scoring.

Farming background

Grew up in a rural community in New Zealand, and started my own Lawnmowing business as a teenager. This was bought out by my parents who still run the business today. I also worked for a range of farms both in full time and casual arrangements, as below - 400 ha, 3,700 stock unit sheep and beef farm. Helped out on my neighbours farm growing up with main responsibilities being assisting with shearing, docking, drenching, weed management and general farm duties. - 250 ha, 300 cow organic dairy farm. Main responsibilities included milking, tractor driving, weed management and calf rearing. - 1,800 ha arable farm, growing predominantly potatoes, onions, cereals and small seeds. Employed over harvest and in a casual role whilst studying at university. Main responsibilities included tractor driving with grain carts, cultivation equipment and using a Hay Hiker to stack straw bales, JCB and Merlo telehandler driving, forklift driving, irrigation management, truck driving and some development work. Have recently been working on a 4,000 ha (10,000 acre) arable farm in the UK, doing a season on ta combine, drilling and cultivation work. Other non-farm work includes - Factory hand/ labourer in a stock-feed mill. Main responsibilities included serving customers, mixing and bagging feeds, forklift and JCB telehandler driving. Also assisted with the development of new premises which involved digger driving, truck driving and concrete laying. - Truck driver (HGV Class 2 equivalent) part-time. Delivered refrigerated produce to supermarkets throughout Christchurch City, New Zealand. - Dairy farm consultant. Main responsibilities included filling my client book and building a good rapport with clients, providing advice to clients on a wide range of topics, including technical knowledge, financial budgeting, farm systems, strategic and governance advice as well as environmental management.
