Farming background

I am not from a farming background as I was previously an Area Manager for a large security company in the North West. Due to a change in circumstances this has enabled me to have the opportunity to explore an avenue I have always been highly interested and passionate about being agriculture, in particular the dairy industry. I started volunteering on a Care Farm which quickly led to full time employment. Although I thoroughly enjoyed working with the various stock this helped inspire me to fulfil my passion of a career in the dairy industry. I was able to find myself a voluntary opportunity on a small local dairy farm. This then led on to me being fortunate enough to secure a 7 month temporary contract on a Dairy unit as an Assistant Herdsperson covering for one of the herdsman while he was away. I worked on a 12 on 2 off rota milking 250 cows 3 times a day. Whilst working on the farm roles and responsibilities included: Assisting herdsman with milking, cleaning beds, bedding down, caring for freshly calved cow and calf, pushing/moving stock, feeding young stock, administering medication, assisting vets with PD and routine health checks, parlour hygiene, tractor scraping collection yard and heifer yard.

Long walks, field sports and reading.
