Farming background

Raised on a working smallholding where father milked a dozen guernseys. This changed to a suckler herd in my early teens and I influenced it toward pedigree, we built up a good little herd of Simmental ,who's descendants still pop up in shows and sales. Worked for a variety of neighbour mainly in cash crops before leaving school. Then did two 12month placements related to collage courses, the first a 50cow dairy with potato and broccoli , the second a 200sow pig unit where I also relief milked one of the 300 cow dairy herds. I did a lambing placement , where I was asked to come back and do a full years management of the 700 ewes and fencing the ground which had formerly been tenented. I then did 7 mts travelling Australia on a working visa before being offered a stockman position in a large pedigree Simmental herd with many summer shows and breed sales and stayed in this role for nearly 9 years. I then took on a stockman/ manager role with a pedigree longhorn , commercial Charolais and 200 ewes farm run alongside a large horse stud . My position for the last 10 years has been as stockman/ manager on an estate with lots of horses and a 65 cow pedigree Devon herd which has been developed and now achieving good recognition at shows and sales . I do the majority of field operations as well as working out grazing/forage plans , upkeep of fences etc and communicating with contractors, grooms, butchers and others as required . The only reason I am considering a move is since the loss of my elderly employers , generally the last two years have been trying .

Hobbies

Keen gardener, mostly flowers and wild flowers on village allotments and the garden . We also have approx five hives of honey bees which I aid the wife when have time . If timings allow I do like to visit a show or two a year as a social exercise , and generally end up helping somebody if I haven't taken our stock . This July and August I am judging both Simmental and Devon cattle at one day shows. I also have a couple of pedigree Simmental of my own which currently run as part of the herd where I work .
