Farming background

I am not from a farming background. 5 Jun 2018 to date Stansfield - Apprenticeship Working as part of a small team I have been involved in most aspects of arable farming. I have experience in tractor and trailer work, cultivations (power harrow etc), fertilising and rolling. I have also observed the process of filling and using a sprayer. I also have experience with spreading slug pellets and herbicides. 8 Nov 2016 to 4 Jun 2018 Horringer -  Work Experience Placement Working alongside the farm owner (tenant) I have been involved in all aspects of sheep husbandry to support my college course as work experience. I have been working for Paul, one day a week and extra days in busy periods. I have experience in scanning, lambing, feeding, worming, tailing and castration, weighing for market, livestock transport, fencing and mole trapping. Although I did not get hands on experience of shearing I did support the process of handling the cut fleeces and moving the sheep to and from the shearing station. I have been present when sheep and lambs have had to be culled and the carcasses taken to the local hunt. Summer 2016 Great Barton - Work Experience Working alongside the farm owner (tenant) I was involved a variety of aspects of arable farming. I completed this work experience before my college course to gain some insight into farming. I was involved in hay baling, harvesting and bale loading and carting. I also observed the process of filling and using a sprayer. November 2015 School Work Experience Placement - I organised for myself a two-week placement with the Garden and Estates team (National Trust). During my time I carried out a lot of general gardening duties and spent time with the rangers putting up new information signs, carrying out equipment maintenance, delivering park goods to customers, building Dormouse boxes and the construction of a trailer that would be used in the planned deer cull in the park. I realty enjoyed working with the rangers as they were able to provide a wide range of activities and time spent with them gave me a broader overview of the activities that take pace across the estate. I really enjoyed the opportunity to have hands on experience and to meet lots of new people and talk about their experiences. The feedback I received from my placement supervisors was all very positive.

Hobbies

I enjoy walking and cycling and I have taken full advantage of family holidays in the Lake District to climb some of the peaks and take time to observe the wildlife. I have purchased a digital camera to take pictures of the birds, wildlife and scenery while I am out and about. I have previously been a member of the Boys Brigade, where I was a member of the band and I was trained in Emergency First Aid by St Johns Ambulance.
