Farming background

I am a highly dedicated, honest and self-motivated person with a strong background of over 20 years within the agricultural industry, including 17 years of dairy experience. My farming background has provided me with an excellent range of skills, including milking with systems such as the Alpha Deval, swing over, parlour fed system. I am confident in all aspects of rearing and caring for calves including ensuring the feeding of colostrum, introducing calves to automatic feeders, regular health checks including lameness as well as being experienced in foot trimming and de-horning. My responsibilities also included regular night checks and the identification of sick and calving cows and treating them accordingly including administering drugs to calves and cattle. I am experienced in heat detection techniques and also in the bedding and scraping of cubicles ensuring the highest standards of hygiene and cleaniless in all aspects of my work. In addition I am experienced in stone-dyking, agricultural fencing and managing and moving electric fencing for strip grazing. I have many years of experience of grading of the land using a variety of machinery such as tractors with and without post-knockers, excavators, quad bikes, forklifts, chainsaws and tele-handlers. My responsibilities have included mowing, rowing up and carting silage as well as slurry and dung spreading and fertilisation. I also have extensive experience of grounds maintenance including, landscaping, grass cuttiing, strimming, hedge- trimming, pruning, ploughing, fertilisation, bedwork, tree clearance, maintenance and repair of forestry roads. I have a proven track record of excellent attendance and timekeeping and am very flexible, regarding duties and working hours. I am a confident driver, with a clean licence and an entitlement of up to 7.5 tonnes with the ability to manoeuvre a variety of agricultural trailers. I also keep myself physically fit and can turn my hand to most things. I am used to performing lifting, unloading and other maintenance and manual duties to a high standard within the jobs I do. My knowledge of health and safety is good, having access to constant on the job training throughout my previous employment and I am able to plan and run routine inspections of livestock, buildings, designated areas of land, equipment and chemicals. I am a good communicator both orally and in written forms with skills in keeping detailed records. I am always keen to learn new skills and to develop my career further. My previous positions have encouraged my ability to work very much on my own initiative and have developed my time management and organisational skills to a high standard. I always ensure that I plan ahead to make sure I manage my schedules and time carefully so that the service I provide is effective, professional and highly efficient. I am also very much a team player and have experience of working within small and wider teams, liaising with colleagues, managers, the general public including educational tours of the farm and a range of people from different businesses and walks of life. As a result, I have good interpersonal skills and a friendly but professional manner. I enjoy meeting people, am tactful and a good listener and am very able to assess needs and take on new challenges, using my initiative to do everything possible to resolve problems and provide the best possible service.


I am a very active person who enjoys travelling, the outdoors and meeting people from all walks of life and as a result my hobbies are varied and include Dog Sledding with my team of 5 Siberian Huskies. I am a member of 3 different Siberian Husky Clubs and race all over The U.K. Gold prospecting also takes me to a variety of locations and allows me to pursue my interest in geology. I enjoy a range of sports including Golf and also play both Darts and Pool competitively.
