I have recently moved back to Scotland from New Zealand after 5 years where I spent most of my time farming. My previous job was assistant farm manager on a 1020 cow dairy farm. The stock work that I was required to do was, picking and drafting cows that were on heat for AI. Calving cows that were in difficulty. Treating down cows with milk fever or grass staggers (IV). Calf rearing. Bull management during mating. Detecting cows with mastitis, lameness and other diseases. Treating cows with antibiotics and treating lame cows. Allocating feed to cows and making break fences. Moving cows and calves to new breaks in paddocks. I also have experience with lambing. I took on a lambing beat when i was New Zealand for 6 weeks. It was 800 ewes. I was given the responsibility to take charge of half the lambing ewes. All the ewes were lambing outside on the rolling hills of Southland. My duties were to check the lambing ewes on a 4 quad bike twice a day, this usually took 2 to 3 hours in the morning and the same again in the afternoon. During these checks I was required to make sure that any ewes that had lambed during the time that i wasn't about had lambed without any problems and that they and their lambs were mothered up correctly. Any ewes that I saw that were in difficulty i had to catch on foot with a crock and assist the lambing. Any lambs that i saw that weren't doing well or had been mis mothered I took back to the wool shed where they were put into a lamb box with a heat lamp and that was also my duty to feed the pet lambs. During the end of the lambing I would shed ewes and lambs off to another paddock and bring any ewes that hadn't yet lambed into a paddock which made things easier. I was also involved in tailing which meant me gathering ewes and lambs into a pen, drafting out the ewes and then tailing, lug marking and scratching lambs. I have also done a indoor lambing in Scotland where I assisted any ewes that were in difficulty. Penned of ewes and lambs. Fed and watered. Rung lambs tails and weathered tup lambs. Scratched lambs before putting out into paddocks. Took ewes and lambs out to paddock with quad bike and trailer.
