Farming background

Currently in charge of rearing approximately 1200 dairy calves over 3 Dairies born in an autumn block calving system with 850 of these being sold at one to two weeks old, and the remaining 350 heifer replacements being kept each year. I am also responsible for overseeing the work of the Calf Rearing Student and various Veterinary Students. I complete the necessary day-to-day tasks as well as record keeping, attending the veterinary visits, stomach tubing colostrum, disbudding, weighing, administering medicines, turning out onto pasture, worming, foot bathing, foot trimming, and completing bulling checks 3 times a day ready for AI'ing. In the spring/summer months I am operating the rake for silaging. At the same time I am also checking the health of the livestock and the quality of the pastures on a daily basis. Maintaining and repairing any fences/electric fencing. I have had many years experience working alongside my brother with his 450 flock of ewes. Day & Night lambing, rounding up and administering wormer, fly spray, foot trimming, grading.
