Farming background

I grew up on the family farm where i started gaining my knowlege of all the different aspects of farming. This ranged from tending to the dairy cows, learning how to rear and care for youngstock aswell as becoming extremely confident with using and maintaining most farm implements. I then began work on two local farms, one of which i went on to work on for 9 years, here i furthered my experience working on a successful dairy farm where they kept the bull calves for the beef industry. I had a very strong role here, being left to manage the feeding of the herd, grazing, identifying illness, lameness and cows on heat. I was also responsible for safely using and maintaining the machinery and equipment. This included all aspects of silaging, ploughing, feeding up, bedding up, hedgetrimming, fencing etc. Whilst here i also performed the milking on a regular basis. The other farm focused upon beef production and specialised in breeding and showing their animals. Since then i have gone on to a family farm, where gained and furtherd my experience working with beef as well working with sheep and horses. I had a strong valued position here and was left to perform and organise a large percentage of the work carried out here across all areas of the farm from the livestock to the field work.
