Farming background

I work as a general farm worker on Oathall School Farm, dealing with dairy cattle, beef, sheep and pigs. It is a small farm, with few animals but I have gained a lot of experience here. I milk the cattle in the mornings and afternoons in a two abreast parlour before feeding the calves milk or concentrates and topping up hay racks with hay and silage. I have experienced calving, de-horning and vaccinating these animals. Also I work with the pigs and have to feed and muck them out also in the morning and afternoon in the schools small pig unit where they grow and finish piglets. The school also had around 40+ sheep but have recently cut down to just over 20. I am involved with lambing every year from setting up until the last lamb is born. I have assisted births and taken care of lambs and ewes before and after birth with all the correct vaccinations and wormers. I have completed and passed routine assessments at college. I have assisted milking the colleges 250+ holstein cattle in the mornings and afternoons as well as feeding the calves concentrates milk and roughage, also bedding up and scraping out. I have been involved in a tb test, foot dipping, vaccinating and de-horning on the dairy unit too. Also I did routines on the pig unit at college too, where i did general work such as sweeping and mucking out, feeding the farrowing house, moving sows and boars, and also vaccinating piglets and docking their tails. Sheep routines involved checking the colleges 550 flock daily with the shepherd, feeding rams and also I have been involved in lambing their ewes this spring, where i experienced a difficult lambing where the vet was called out. I have also learnt to crutch, vaccinate and worm ewes in practice sessions.

I am part of a young farmers club and show pedigree Holstein cattle for my college.
