Farming backgroundI didn't grow up on a farm but on a 5 acre bush property north-west of Sydney, Australia. As a school student I worked in wholesale plant nurseries and then as a landscaper for a tree company/nursery. During university I worked for one year on a stone fruit, avocado and macadamia orchard. This was mainly picking (including using three-wheeled cherry-picker), pruning, de-suckering and a bit of packing shed work, just myself and the farmer on 50 acres. After graduating in 2000 I started working as a wildlife ecologist, which is what I have predominantly done since, with the exception of several farm jobs and study in between. I travelled to the UK in 2001 and worked on a sheep and beef cattle property near Edinburgh for 3.5 months (see above) and on a grain harvest in the Midlands for a couple of months corn carting in 2002. I have some family and friends who grow wool and lamb in south-eastern Australia on 750 acre and 2,500 acre properties and have spent a few weeks working with them, mainly doing sheep mustering and yard work. I also worked briefly mustering cattle on a 2.4 million acre station in northern Australia. In 2009 I worked for a harvesting contractor for around two months in Queensland and NSW, Australia, operating combines harvesting chick peas, wheat and flax seed. In between jobs for the contractor I worked for three weeks on a mixed farm in SE Queensland operating a very old JD combine harvesting irrigated wheat. I spent 6 months in 2015 doing an internship on a 400 acre organic farm owned by TAFE NSW (technical college) which has sheep, free range pigs, free range chickens, bees, olives, mushrooms, forestry and some cereal crops, all of which I was involved with while I was there. I am currently completing my final project to attain my Diploma in Organic Farming. In 2015 I had a stall at the local farmer's market selling organic vegetable seedlings that I'd grown in my backyard. I also voluntarily managed a small rooftop organic vegetable garden for the Australian National University's organic food co-op in Canberra, Australia, where the produce is used in the co-op cafe. In other work, I have spent around half of the last 16 years as a field ecologist, mainly conducting wildlife surveys in different parts of eastern Australia. I have also worked as a consultant ecologist, bush regenerator, wildlife tour guide and for local and Commonwealth government in the environmental management field. In 2016 I volunteered on a mixed Biodynamic farm in Sussex, mainly to learn more about B-D methods of grain growing and animal husbandry. Currently working on a market garden and 1100-tree mixed orchard near Canberra, Australia, and doing some fruit tree pruning work on the side. Recently completed Master of Science in Agriculture.
HobbiesQuite a keen vegetable gardener; enjoy hiking and camping; bike riding; interested in reading history; follow the Southern Hemisphere rugby and Internationals; landscaping projects around the house.
