Farming background

During the lambing season of 2014 I went to a mixed farm and helped out for a short period of time, I was then offered a placement working there for the whole season the following year. After that placement in 2015 I found myself another job on a farm lambing 1200 ewes and worked there until they were down to 100 ewes left to lamb and returned to college. My main roles on these farms were lambing, feeding, watering, bedding up and moving ewes and lambs. Throughout college summer holidays I worked on a 2000 acre arable farm alongside my father. I spent my time there loading grain Lorries, corn carting, testing the grain moisture and working on the weighbridge. I’ve also spent a few years wool rolling throughout the shearing season. After my two years at college I immediately started job hunting and was informed about a job on a beef, sheep and dairy farm in Buckinghamshire. I went for an interview with the farmer and got the job. Since being on that farm I’ve gained milking, calving, calf rearing, animal husbandry, shepherding and machinery experience (Feeding/bedding down with a telehandler, bale carting, muck carting, muck spreading, slurry spreading, scraping out, mowing etc). After working on that farm for a year I did a summer on a 500 head dairy farm in Buckinghamshire throughout their busy calving period. When I finished at the dairy I began working on a horse racing yard in Warwickshire throughout the 2017/18 point to point season, here I spent my time mucking out, riding, grooming, washing off horses, getting horses ready for exercise or racing and other general groom jobs.
