Farming backgroundJune 2017-Present Telehandler Operator Randstad CPE. I am currently driving a telehandler on a building site. October 2016 -June 2017 Youngstock Manager for the 300 cow pedigree Holstein dairy herd at Plumpton Agricultural College. My role involved feeding the calves and all youngstock from birth until they calve down and the beef calves until they are sold at 3-4 weeks old. I also milked twice a week and did the general work involved with the dairy herd as part of a 3 man team. I was also responsible for supervising students when they are on routines and do additional tractor work at busy times. June 2016 - October 2016 I worked for myself doing general farm work. This included sheep work fencing and tractor work for a number of different farmers. I also did some relief milking and AI. I also gained some shearing experience and sheared a few small flocks. During this period I also spent a month in Australia with my girlfriend. October 2014 -June 2016 General farm worker. I worked for a contractor who farms a large arable acreage as well as contract rearing 450 dairy heifers for a local dairy herd. I was primarily responsible for the day to day care of the cattle, from 2 week old milk calves to 2 year old animals. I fed them with a mixer wagon and was responsible for heat detection and serving the bulling heifers. I got my AI certificate in January 2015. I was occasionally required to get involved with the arable enterprise and work alongside the tractor drivers. I also did a large amount of fencing. My employer recently took on an organic Angus suckler herd and I was also responsible for them although the decision was taken to sell the 40 cows before they calved and just run the youngstock on. May 2014 - October 2014 I worked as a general farm worker on a 350 cow crossbred dairy herd, this role initially involved a lot of tractor work and once the cows started calving in August I reared all the calves, indoors for the first 3 weeks then they were turned out and fed with a milk feeder pulled behind a quadbike. I also checked the calving cows at grass 3 times a day and gained experience of calving cows by myself. I did relief milking whilst here too. August 2013 - May 2014 I did a 10 month work placement in New Zealand initially working on a sheep farm which ran 4000 Romney ewes. To start with they were strip grazed on swedes, I then did a lambing season assisting the farmer, we were each responsible for half the flock and lambed them outside. I used my dog to catch the ewes which needed assistance and lambed them in the field. I also crutched a large number of the old season lambs before they were slaughtered. I left here at the end of lambing and went to a dairy farm where I milked 300 cows twice a day and learned a lot about pasture management.
