Other livestock experience

I have three years experience of running an organic sheep farm near Marlborough consisting of 180 Lleyn breeding ewes and 60 Castlemilk Moorit (plus flock replacements and followers), with responsibility for total flock care, forage and pasture management and estate upkeep. While running the flock I improved the lambing percentage from 0.5 to 0.7 (during three lambing seasons) and improved birth weights by effective nutritional management of the ewe pre-lambing and in early lactation and with the subsequent improvements in DLG. Foot rot was prolific within the flock when I took over, through the use of the FAI's 5 point plan and careful pasture management reduced the problem to a manageable 8%.The organic status of the farm, required strict compliance and meticulous record keeping to maintain its organic status, working within Soil Association requirements, which was my responsibility. I have managed a cattle enterprise of around 130 head of AAX from weaned caves to around 22 months

Farming background

I started my working life in the military, then worked as an engineer and spent 18 years with the company in operational roles. I left the cooperate employment as I wanted to work within agriculture. I started my own business and took on a contract to manage an organic sheep farm near Marlborough where I soon gained enough responsibility to take over the flock and estate management. Since my time as a shepherd I have been a student at the Royal Agricultural University to complete a Graduate Diploma in Agriculture (which I passed with merit overall), studying advanced crop production (passed with distinction) and advanced livestock production as optional modules. I have worked for a number of mixed farms and contractors since 2014, helping with business/compliance/assurance schemes management to working as a sprayer/combine operator and assiting in running their operations.
