November 2022 - Present Contract Management Shetland Isles

Day to day management of a large croft in Shetland during a transitional period. The croft consists of 300 hill ewes (Scottish Blackface/Shetland) and 350 first cross-ewes (Cheviot x). Working with the owner to establish an ongoing plan surrounding grassland management and stocking density to better suit the land type and environmental constraints.

The planning and implementation of repair and maintenance of both buildings and machinery that has been poorly maintained over time.

December 2021 - November 2022 Farm Manager 

Managing a 400ac beef/sheep/arable farm in mid Norfolk consisting of a herd of 60 suckler cows and 180 Poll Dorset ewes lambing three times a year. During the winter months grazing the cattle on fodder crops using strip grazing and in the spring turning the cattle and sheep onto rented ground throughout Norfolk. Solely responsible for the welfare of the stock and the logistics of moving livestock around Norfolk to ensure grazing is available. Arranging contracting for the farm through communication with arable/silage contractors and other landowners to ensure enough winter feed/bedding available.

March 2019 - December 2021 Farm Manager

Taking full responsibility of a 650ac beef/sheep farm located 2km off the coast of Dublin. Implementing transition from cattle to sheep in order to increase productivity and reduce logistical issues. Increasing the flock of breeding ewes from 80 to 300 through purchases and breeding on farm. Contacting distributers in the supply chain to ensure the lamb produced is valued in the top 10% in Ireland. Ensuring farm records are up to date and ready for on farm inspection at all times. Utilising previous experience to ensure welfare of the stock is increased constantly resulting in an increase in flock/herd health and in turn profit.

July 2016 Aug 2018Farm Manager

Reporting to the Area Manager, running all aspects of an 85000 bird site in Suffolk ensuring the highest bird welfare is maintained while being sure a good amount of profit is made every crop. Maintenance of two biomass boilers and a CHP unit on site relaying any problems to engineers and attempting to remedy. Training other farm managers on the use of MTech. Regularly travelling to other farms in order to set-up farm for chick-up. Attending growers meeting on behalf of the company.

Running on farm trails and reporting the results to both senior management and external companies.

August 2014 - July 2016Contract Shepherding

Working on a mixed farm on the Hebridean Isle of Islay.The farm consists of 600 ewes, a mix of Scottish Blackface and Mules, 200 Aberdeen Angus cattle and 100 acres of barley. The barley production was particularly important as it was produced to supply a specific brand of malt whisky and therefore the specifications were precise and all aspects of of crop production had to be accurate. Duties included lambing, calving, general livestock husbandry, crop management and general farm duties. Often left in a position of responsibility for the successful running of the farm during the absence of the owner, taking full responsibility for day to day tasks.

Contract Shepherding/ lambing on various farms including ******Farm, an award winning farm in the Pembrokeshire National Park. Duties included all aspects of animal management, planning and implementing new ideas into the farms. This experience has allowed me to follow best practice and use my knowledge in an advisory capacity to support other agricultural businesses, while allowing the development of the importance of financial planning with profitability being of the upmost importance.

August 2012 - September 2013 Serbia, Romania

Three months were spent in Serbia driving one of two Grimmie Vairitron potato harvesters and dealing with their maintenance. Involved in the maize harvest in a project that involved and assisted local farmers. This included both practical involvement in the harvest and planning and forecasting for future production.

The remaining time in employment was spent in Romania. Three months were spent driving equipment such as sprayers and chaser bins. The rest of the period was spent managing the installation of a 3075 ha irrigation project consisting of 28 centre pivot irrigators. The main duties were testing borehole capacities, setting timescales for the project, ensuring work carried out by contractors was of a high standard and managing a team of local workers in order to achieve a positive company ethos. Other duties were liaising with suppliers of pumps and irrigators to arrange delivery and to resolve any issues that occurred during the installation process. Upon satisfactory completion of the project a final report was presented to the heads of the company detailing the project.
