Farming background

I grew up on a farm and have always had an interest in farming and machinery. I have done most tractor work around the farm e.g. sowing, topping and slurry spreading. My Father was once a silage contractor and this enabled me to have all relevant experience in mowing, harvesting with forage harvester and carting silage. I have also done some turf cutting with my Father in the spring with a mechanical turf cutter and tractor. There is always mechanical and workshop work to be done on the farm which I get involved with as much as I can. My uncle has now taking over the silage contracting and focuses mainly on round baling. I have worked along with him in the summer which involved; baling, wrapping and mowing. I have gained five seasons harvest experience in the UK which has developed my skills even further. This gave me the opportunity to work on larger farms compared to Ireland along with using larger machinery. The tractors that I had been using were new and up to date along with all the equipment. I was working as part of a team while in England but was also able to work on my own when needed. I gained great experience from this which really improved my knowledge of arable and vegetable farming. A couple of years ago I spent the season over in New Zealand working for a baling contractor; this included all aspects of hay making with fantastic views. It was an exceptional experience and I thoroughly enjoyed my time spent in the country. Just last Christmas I completed a harvest in Esperance WA covering 8000ha which was nothing like I had done before with everything on such a huge scale. I spent most of my time on a CAT Challenger 855c operating a 31t J&M Chaser bin. With some time also spent on a New Holland T8.390, T9.670 and a CR9070 with 45ft header. Following up from this I have completed a seeding season back out in Esperance WA. My main role was operating a new CAT Challenger 765E as part of the planting team with a 45ft Morris bar using Greenstar GPS on a 13.6m CTF System. I have also done some spraying on a 10,000L, 40m tug along boomspray and some fertilizer spreading on a 10t Bredal Spreader. I moved on from this to work on a huge cotton farm in NSW Australia were I was operating a cotton harvester in a team of 7. I spent last summer part of the arable team in Kent. I was initially part of the combine crew operating a John Deere T670i HillMaster, then continuing onto cultivations and drilling using a John Deere 8370RT with Sumo and Simba equipment. Working within a large team I gained valuable experience and had a fantastic summer. I am now currently back in Ireland and helping my father on our family farm, however I was seeking some further work in the UK throughout Spring and Summer time.
