Job Title: Winery and Vineyard Assistant Reporting to: Winemaker and Estate Manager

Start date: 1st March 2021


£10.50 per hour. 40 hours per week. Banked hours for overtime (circa. £22,000 per annum). Pension contribution. 28 days holiday including bank holidays.

Job Summary:

This role will support the Winemaker and Vineyard Manger in the manual tasks involved in vine growing, winemaking and estate management. The role will be manual and often repetive. It will involve a lot of outdoor work in all weathers.

In the winery the role will include cellar work, barrel work, maintenance and sanitation of the winery, laboratory work, dispatch and the operation of winery equipment.

In the vineyard the role will include manual viticulture practices, machinery operations, harvesting grapes and general maintenance and repairs.

The role will also see varied work at the estate to maintain a high level of appearance and this will involve mowing, weeding and raking of pathways and waste disposal. There will also be work involved with tastings and events held at the winery.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Winery Assistance:

-Take part in all aspects of winery sanitation to a high standard including: tank sanitation, bin washing, barrel washing, drain cleaning and general winery cleanliness

-Forklift operation to support winery functions

-Operate and sanitise complex winemaking equipment under supervision of the Winemaker

-Cellar work including racking, barrelling down, and topping

-Assist in bottling and disgorging operations

-Assist in the labelling, packaging, dispatch and shipping of bottled wines

-Basic lab work including acidity by titration, pH and SO2 by aspiration

-Compacting of cardboard and plastic, and general waste disposal

Vineyard Assistance and Estate Maintenance:

-Assist and work with vineyard contractors/seasonal workers as directed by the Estate Manager

-Assist with record keeping for crop and historical farm data including labour, water, pesticides, yields and quality parameters

-Acquire and maintain the appropriate spray licenses to apply pesticide and herbicide application

-Execute frost management systems

-Operate tractors and equipment under instruction of the Estate Manager

-Vineyard and property maintenance to include: inspection and repair of deer fencing, grass cutting, cover crop maintenance, irrigation system and reservoir maintenance, pergola presentation and pathway maintenance/presentation

Harvest Support:

-Vineyard sampling and associated laboratory work

-Crop harvesting if required

-Management of picking bins

-Logistics management of purchased fruit from contracted vineyards

-Assist in fruit receiving, grape sorting, destemming and bin dumping

Other job functions:

-Compliance with Heath and Safety requirements, adhering to winery safety protocols

-Promote, embody and represent Danbury Wine Estate and its values at trade and consumer events, tastings, shows and training seminars

-Commitment to maintaining and continually improving quality in all aspects of the production process

-Facility maintenance including weeding, sweeping, emptying bins, polishing glasses and running winery related errands

-Completion of miscellaneous tasks under the direction of the Winemaker or Estate Manager as necessary

Qualifications and Skills:

-Where appropriate candidates must obtain under their own accord a valid permit to live and work in the UK

-Experience of working in a winery or vineyard is preferable. However, experience in agriculture or landscaping would also be an advantage

-Experience of operating tractors, forklifts and/or other heavy machinery

-Full, clean driving licence
