Description

Livestock Person required to join a friendly Estate team

We are a 1000Ha Estate which comprises 400Ha of arable, 400Ha of woodland and 200Ha of grassland. The Estate is based on the fringes of Sevenoaks, Kent.

Significant investment has been made within the yard and cattle housing area. The livestock enterprise is well equipped with various mobile handling systems, a McHale C490 bale chopper, John Deer V419 Baler, and cameras in the barns for night-time checking.

We are looking for someone to take responsibility for our 60 strong breeding herd of award winning, high health accredited, pedigree Sussex cattle in addition to a 50 strong flock of sheep. We would like additional flexibility to introduce some pigs to support our meat sales locally. The role also involves selling our Estate produce locally to build up the meat brand.

Because of the quality of the herd, it is expected that the herd will be shown at various agricultural shows, time permitting. Last year we attended 6 shows and were Breed Champion at 3 of them. Additional support is offered to do this.

Usual duties would include:

  • Daily feeding, bedding and care of all cattle and sheep (rota system at weekends)

  • Responsibility for calving and lambing

  • Management of routine vaccinations as part of our high-health accreditation (BVD and Johnes), animal movement records, oversight of vet visits to ensure that the highest standards of animal welfare and husbandry are achieved

  • Analysis and management of the breeding lines and quality interpretation of growth weights using Signet

  • Appropriate grass management

  • Budgeting and management reporting (training will be available to support this for the right person) as the Estate prides itself on developing staff

Reporting to and liaising with the Farm manager, the right person is required to be able to work independently, and to be a team player with a can do attitude.

The candidate:

  • Current driving licence required for on and off-road driving

  • Tractor (John Deere) driving, hauling and JCB telehandler skills essential

  • PA1, PA2 and PA6a

  • Must be computer literate

A desk and computer in the Estate Office is provided.

Competitive salary and housing included (adjacent to the livestock barns).
