Job for a Manager - Ormsary Smolt Unit - Scotland

We currently have an exciting opportunity for someone to manage the day-to-day production of juvenile Atlantic salmon at the Ormsary & Clachbreac Smolt Units. Combined, the Units produce approximately 4.5 million smolts per year and have a full-time staff of eight husbandry personnel.

This is a challenging position, and we want to recruit someone looking to take the next step in their fish farming career. Candidates must be able to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of current smolt production in flow-through systems and have the excellent interpersonal skills required to lead, inspire & motivate people. A full UK driving licence and eligibility to work in UK are both essential.

Ormsary Smolt Unit Manager

Purpose of the job:

The Manager is responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day operation of the Ormsary & Clachbreac Smolt Units.

The main objectives of the position are

•Produce the required number of high quality Atlantic salmon juveniles, parr and smolts, to meet the annual production target.

•Operate profitably & efficiently, within agreed budgets.

•Ensure that both production units are a positive reflection of the Companys values.

•Encourage & maintain excellent relationships with Customers.

•Maintain a trained & motivated full-time staff compliment.

•Maintain site infrastructure, plant & machinery in good working order.

Organisational Context:

Located: Lochgilphead, Argyll. 

Hierarchical Reporting: Freshwater Production Manager

Subordinates: Advanced Husbandry Operatives (3) Husbandry Operatives (5)


Experience: Must have experience of juvenile Atlantic salmon production in a managerial or supervisory role.

Knowledge needed: Familiarity with current best operating practices in all aspects of production from first feeding to smolt

Knowledge desirable: Understanding of QMS & EMS, Code of Good Practice, RSPCA Assured, GlobalGAP, Soil Association organic standard.

Other: Must hold a full UK driving licence, be eligible to work in the UK and be fluent in English

Key Accountabilities:

•Assist the Freshwater Production Manager to establish, review & modify where necessary, stock production plans to meet the annual production targets.

•Provide leadership, training & development opportunities for all employees to enable them to execute their duties at a high level of competency.

•To care for all fish stocks in accordance with the Veterinary Health & Welfare Plan, including full implementation of documented Biosecurity Measures, and the provision of alarm duty and weekend cover to ensure that stocks and sites are secure at all times.

•Plan & execute stock rearing & handling activities, in accordance with the current Production Plan and site / Company Standard Operating Procedures.

•Plan & execute all maintenance activities, including the purchase & acquisition of necessary supplies, efficiently and in a cost-effective manner.

•Assist the Freshwater Production Manager to select and recruit new employees as the need arises.

•With the prior agreement of the Freshwater Production Manager, to plan and execute trials aimed at continual improvement of the production process, incorporating up-to-date technologies & resources.

Administrative Duties

Maintain accurate and up-to-date stock records covering all aspects of the production process in order to provide full traceability to customers and auditors on demand.

Ensure that proper safety standards are maintained to at least that required under the Health and Safety at Work Act, and in full accordance with the Companys health and safety policy and procedures.

Ensure the details of accidents or near-misses are recorded, investigated and reported to the Companys Health and Safety Committee.

Conduct annual employee appraisals and maintain accurate & up-to-date personnel records identifying training needs analysis & delivery.

Keep records for the service and maintenance of site infrastructure, plant and equipment.

Ensure that necessary documents and records are accurate and up-to-date to demonstrate full compliance with the requirements of regulatory bodies, SEPA, Marine Scotland, Highland Council, and other pertinent legislation.

Communication & Reporting

Establish and maintain effective channels of communication with site employees ensuring that they are kept aware of production targets and current progress, as well as the latest news and developments within the Company.

Maintain regular & effective communication with the Freshwater Production Manager specifically reporting any exceptional incidents as they arise and any developments which may have an impact on the Companys activities.

Produce a written monthly report summarising key production activities from the previous month and for the month ahead, highlighting areas of potential concern.

Maintain professional confidentiality at all times. Do not enter into correspondence or discussion with any media groups without prior approval from the Freshwater Production Manager.
