Job for a General Farm Worker - Milking/Tractors/Calves - Somerset
Dairy
UK
BA4
South West
Description

Chancellors Dairy is a 180 cow Spring calving herd based between Bruton and Frome in Somerset. All replacements are reared in house, the Spring born heifers are turned out on the milk bar when the weather allows, and bulling heifers run on off-lying ground 5 minutes away.

A vacancy has arisen for a Dairy Farm Worker due to a change in business structure at the farm.

The role is varied and requires initiative as although there is a herd manager generally you will work independently. You must be able to milk alone for 4 milkings per week in an 18/36 Fullwood parlour and be competent in using machinery to undertake the fertilising, some tanking, and topping/mowing. We try to run one day a week and every other weekend off outside of calving.

Calving is undertaken in a tight ten week block with 60% of the herd calving within the first three weeks.

The role will also include general maintenance of fences and water troughs around the farm, generally keeping everything tidy and in good working order. During the Winter months, when the cattle are housed you will be expected to feed the cows and scrape the yards and help to rear the calves. The role changes with the seasons and is varied and interesting. We expect the role to be around a 40 hour week in the summer months with a peak of 65 hours/week potentially during calving.

The herd is set across 264 acres of all ryegrass and clover leys.

Milk is sold for cheese production to AR & RG Barbers at Ditcheat, meaning we run a crossbred Spring calving herd with the aim of high milk constituents from grazing. The herd is BVD accredited free and always within the top 20% of producers for milk quality.

The farm runs minimal machinery with a Case Farmall 110 with a loader and a Ford 4000 to scrape the yards.

Renumeration will be in line with experience and a 3 bedroom wool-away bungalow is available onsite if required. 28 Days holiday and a NEST pension scheme are also available.
